5 Part II — The Vintage Story Leo Lyons—The Man Leo worked on three significant “car projects” in his life – each ended up on magazine covers: Leo Lyons Custom Mercury – February, 1960 “Custom Cars” Leo went on to be the first to design and build hemi heads for the small block Chevrolet V8. This, too, went on to great acclaim being featured on at least two magazine covers. Key individuals that were involved in this development reads like a “who’s who” of 50s engineering innovation: Leo Goossen, Ed Iskenderian, Art Sparks, Clifford Collins, and more. Leo Lyons hemi heads make Ardun heads look common these days. January, 1966 Hot Rod Parts Illustrated and March, 1966 Rod & Custom. Leo also went on to design another project – a dune buggy called the “Fun Hugger.” The Fun Hugger also appeared on a magazine cover and was one of the first of its kind (in terms of design and introduction) to appear on the scene.
