America’s Lost Concept Cars:
Definition: While all of us in the car hobby have come to appreciate and be inspired by the concept cars produced by General Motors, Ford, Chrylser, and the Independents, there was a parallel movement in the 1950’s and 1960’s of creating concept cars across America that has been virtually forgotten
Cars were being developed by individuals and small companies that rivaled the design the big names and their shows in every way. And there was a venue – an international stage – for these cars to debut: The Petersen Motorama and Other International Car Shows that Were Being Held Across America. These include:
- Petersen Motorama (click here to view programs)
- Chicago Auto Show
- International Motor Sports Show: New York
- World Motor Sports Show: New York
- And more (I have complete list from the 1950’s)
- Checkout the attachment showing cars in the 1954 Chicago Auto Show. The “Big 3” and Independent Mfg Concept Cars there included: Ford Atmos and Thunderbird, DeSoto Ghia, Hudson Italia, Cadillac Le Espada, Plymouth Belmont, Chevrolet hardtop Corvette, Dodge Firearrow, Olds F88, Mercury XM89, Packard Panther Daytona, Pontiac Bonneville Special, and at the bottom…..The Chicagoan. Pictures attached.
