I love to see strong prices for the cars we appreciate and restore – the handcrafted American specials from the postwar years.  Recently we saw a Glasspar G2 sell at the Sotheby’s Amelia Island Auction (2019) for $109,200 including fees.

Earlier this month, the Manta Ray Show Car from 1952 was brought to auction by Mecum as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance festivities.  Click here to view the auction information about this car.  Estimates at a sale price for this car were between $200,000 and $300,000.  Let’s take a look at some of the auction photos when it was on the block.

And while the bidding was strong and continued to $190,000, the Manta Ray did not meet reserve.  It was exciting to watch the auction, though, and now you can too.  Click the link below and you can watch the 2-minute auction segment on this car via YouTube.

Summary:

After the auction, I had a chance to talk with the owner of the Manta Ray, D.E. Lacer, and he shared that he has plans to restore the car back to its original color and condition.  It will be great to see the car back on the field next time and get a chance to see it as originally designed – see vintage photos below.
